The Dutch Oven: This cooking tool raises many questions. Questions such as “What is a Dutch Oven”, “What is it used for?”, and “What can I cook with it?”.
Vremi is here to break it all down for you with some tips, tricks, and deals along the way.
What Is A Dutch Oven?
The Dutch Oven can be one of the most versatile cooking tools in your culinary arsenal. They are well known for their thick, durable construction and are usually made by heavy metals or ceramics. Our “Dutch Ado About Oven” Dutch Oven sports a quality cast iron body with two coats of enamel on the inside. This allows the Dutch Oven to step up to just about any cooking task, which brings us to.
What Is A Dutch Oven Used For?
Almost anything really. The way that Dutch Ovens are constructed allows you to cook with it on almost any surface from stovetops to the oven to even a campfire and you can cook just about anything! You can whip up stew (beef stew, chicken stew, any kind really), pulled pork, roast (beef roast or a pork roast), pork chops, chili, jambalaya, and even cook a chicken breast or a whole chicken and there’s plenty of vegetarian recipes as well, if that’s your sort of thing.
You can even create meals you wouldn’t think were possible from a pot such as PIZZA, bread, or desserts such as apple cobbler, peach cobbler, monkey bread or just about anything else your sweet tooth desires.
What Can I Cook With My Dutch Oven?
Glad you asked! Aside from the litany of delicious foods we listed, we wanted to highlight this amazing recipe you can make with your Dutch Oven courtesy of our friends at Skinny Taste, One Pot Cheesy Turkey Taco Chili Mac!
Here’s what you’ll need:
For the homemade taco seasoning:
- 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp oregano
For the Chili:
- 1.3 lb 93% lean ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves minced garlic
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 10 oz can rotel tomatoes with green chilies
- 14.5 oz can pink or red beans, drained
- 8 oz tomato sauce
- 1/2 can (8 oz) fat-free refried beans
- 1 (15 oz can) reduced-sodium chicken broth*
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 8 oz pasta shells
- ¾ cup part-skim shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
- 2 tbsp chopped scallions
Here are the directions on how to create this one-pot delicacy:
- Heat a large Dutch oven or pot with a fitted lid over medium-high heat and spray with oil, brown the turkey breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
- When cooked through, add the onions, garlic, pepper and taco seasoning; cook 2-3 minutes.
Add the canned tomatoes, beans, tomato sauce, refried beans, chicken broth and water.
Bring to a boil, cover and simmer about 15 minutes. Adjust salt to taste.
Stir in the uncooked pasta and simmer uncovered over medium heat until al dente, about 6 minutes or according to package directions.
Remove the pot from heat and top with the cheese, cover and let sit for about 2-3 minutes, until the cheese melts.
Serve immediately garnished with fresh cilantro and scallions.
How Can I Clean My Dutch Oven?
Cleaning your Dutch Oven is easy! Simply give it a nice wash with soap and water and you’ll be good to go. Due to its construction, however, it's not recommended to put the Dutch Oven in the dishwasher so keep it old school with a hand wash.
