March Madness is coming to an end and two weeks, 62 games, and whole a lot of busted brackets later we have arrived at our Final Four teams. Now, we’ll be the first to admit that we don’t know the ins and outs of college basketball. We’re not quite sure how these teams will scheme up against each other and who the playmakers to watch will be. But we do know one thing around here, and that’s food. We’ll leave the X’s and O’s to other blogs and instead, break down each school on what really matters: the food that the region is known for. Using that, we did a vote here at Vremi HQ and made our predictions for the upcoming games. So let’s get to it.

#11 Loyola Chicago

This year’s Cinderella story, Loyola, surprised everyone and reached the final four, destroying several, several brackets along the way. With a strong core of players and inspired coaching, it’s possible that this team isn’t done shocking the basketball world. From our intensive research, we’ve discovered that Loyola Chicago is based in Chicago, where one type of food reigns supreme….

In this case, DEEP DISH PIZZA from Giordano’s. With two locations near campus, Giordano’s is not only a staple of Chicago but of the school, as well. Different from your standard pizza, a stuffed deep dish pizza has much deeper topping density than any other type of pizza. A deep layer of dough forms a bowl in a high-sided pan and the toppings and cheese are added. Then, an additional layer of dough goes on top and is pressed to the sides of the crust. So yeah, it's pretty amazing.

#3 Michigan

Michigan’s appearance in the Final Four is no surprise. Michigan has been great all season and is heating up at the right time. It won’t be a surprise to see them cutting the nets in one week’s time. But more importantly, the food that best represents this region is...

Yes. We were surprised too, but a very good source from Ann Arbor brought this Michigan phenomenon to our attention. The coney dog is a variation of the classic hot dog you know and love. The difference is that it is topped with chili sauce, chopped raw onion, and a squirt of yellow mustard. Now you may think this is just a “chili dog” but don’t get it twisted, there are some notable differences. The hot dog is grilled and the chili is a loose, almost soupy mix that usually gets an extra-meaty punch from ground beef heart and a variety of spices. Also, the term “coneys” not only refers to the dogs themselves but also serves as shorthand for the type of restaurants where they are served, which have a presence in Detroit. Being a Michigan staple, it’s difficult to recreate the experience outside the state, but if you find yourself in the area, you owe yourself to try one.

#1 Villanova

Villanova is on pace to get it’s second national title in two years. They have become a powerhouse of a program on the verge of a dynasty, which makes it fitting that they are represented by...

The staple of Philadelphia. Whether it’s from Pat’s or Geno’s or that spot that your friend from Philly told you is the REAL cheesesteak joint, it’s a classic. We could go into more detail but it's a Philly cheesesteak. Enough said.

# 1 Kansas

Making it to 15 Final Fours, 9 championship games, and 3 national titles, Kansas is college basketball royalty and this may be their best team yet. It’s only fitting that this team is represented by….

Kansas City barbecue is rubbed with spices, slow-smoked over a variety of woods, and served with a thick tomato-based barbecue sauce, an integral part of KC-style barbecue. It’s also delicious! And there you have it, the most delicious Final Four ever. But who will win it all? We took a survey here in Vremi HQ over the most important question “which would you rather eat?” This is what happened.

Deep Dish Pizza vs. Coney Dogs

There was a lot of confusion over what Coney Dogs were, but once described, it didn’t really help its case. Deep Dish Pizza won in a landslide.

Philly Cheesesteak vs. Kansas City Barbeque

This battle sparked light debate. But those who held their torch for KC BBQ were quickly outvoted by those in love with the combination of cheese, onions, grease and cheese whiz (your cheese selection may vary).

THE FINALS: Deep Dish Pizza vs. Philly Cheesesteak

This was truly a clash of the Titans. Both of these foods are delicious and even better as drinking/hangover food. But after much deliberation, a consensus was made.

CONGRATS TO DEEP DISH PIZZA Loyola Chicago! You are Vremi’s choice to win the National Championship!
